I spent an afternoon painting in my moleskine sketchbook a couple of weeks ago while waiting for my husband and daughter to ride their bikes down the Pa'rus Trail. They are able to tolerate the heat better than I do so I stayed in the shade near the river. </div>

Below you will see a couple of photos of my building process. This piece is now in my "permanent collection" because I like it so much and it inspires me. I may re-fire it as a bit of alumina hydrate drifted to the edge of the glaze on the bottom half and so I need to retouch the glaze there. Alumina hydrate is painted on the flange to keep the two clay surfaces from fusing together during the firing. </div>

This photo shows the clay sheets I have rolled out and cut into sections for the wall of the box, the lid, bottom and a strip for the flange. I have already laminated thin triangle shapes of colored slips in a pleasing pattern onto the wall section of the box and pressed them in with a rolling pin. After painting porcelain slip on the underside of the shapes I place more of them onto the sheet that will become the lid. The slip helps create a bond between the two surfaces. The lid section is then also pressed with a rolling pin and trimmed into a circle. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just to the right of the newly formed box you can see the temporary form used to wrap the clay sheet around and hold it upright while I seam it and add the bottom section. I had flipped it over and pulled the form up and out. This form was made from foamcore and held together with masking tape. When I decide if I like the shape of the new piece I will make a bisque mold from clay in the same shape and in the future use that to form the pieces around as a bisque mold releases the damp clay piece easily. My handbuilt pieces are then dried slowly, bisque fired and then glazed fired. I have displayed quite a few of these boxes in different sizes, shapes and colors at the Tivoli Village market here in Summerlin on Saturday mornings along with our wheel-thrown pottery and we have had an excellent response to them. I've also been very busy in the painting studio working on oils from reference sketches and photos taken during our recent trip to Zion National Park. We spent a few days in the park to observe "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran", the Plein Air Painting Invitational 2012, and to enjoy the gorgeous fall color along the Pa'rus Trail and in the Narrows section of the canyon. Once again, the world-class color of the sandstone cliffs and foliage were breathtaking. </div>

This is a picture of me placing one of the last pots to be fired in the kiln. We glazed most of the first week of September and fired on Monday the 10th. By Wednesday the kiln was cool enough to open and the next picture shows how the pots looked after a cone 10 firing. Cone 10 means reaching 2350 degrees.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Opening a kiln is a little like Christmas morning. It's exciting because you never know what you're going to get. Some things will be wonderful and a few things will not make it. There is a high loss rate with porcelain because it can change shape, shrink, slump or the glaze can run too much and pool on the shelves. But the translucency of the clay body and the luscious tints of the celadon glazes make it all worth it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

This is one of my finished pieces from this firing. It is glazed with a celadon, a gorgeous yet subtle shade of apple green. The color shapes were added on after the vase was thrown on the wheel. It was carefully dried, then sanded, and bisque fired to make it strong enough to withstand the glazing. To explain further how I did the color shapes, I paint a separate sheet of thin clay with colored slips in an abstract expressionist manner and then cut shapes from that sheet to design and apply patterns on the vases. The beauty of painting in oils and making pottery as well is that the oil painting has made my approach to the slip work more layed, thicker, and painterly. The handle on the lid was handbuilt using the nerikomi method of pressing color shapes into a small sheet of clay and then rolling it into the desired shape. I like to call this pattern "Tumbling Triangles". </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />I have been working in the clay studio with my husband this past month . He works there everyday and I am usually in my painting studio. But he talked me into finishing some pieces I started a few years ago and carrying on in the direction I was going at the time. So this is a photo of a glaze firing we did this past Monday. Bill made most of the pots in this firing. There were 90 pieces in all. But 20 of them were mine and I'm very happy with them. It felt wonderful to handle porcelain again and play with patterns of colored clays on the shoulders of the pieces. Below is a photo of some of the work. </td></tr>

The tall faceted bottle in the foreground is one of Bill's o'hata red pieces. The vases behind the bottle are some of my nerikomi porcelain work. The pots didn't stay on this table beside the kiln for long. We are having 110 degree heat nearly everyday here in Las Vegas so we unloaded the kiln, took some quick snapshots and carried everything inside and out of this heat wave. </div>

The teaching was excellent and the weather was perfect. The class worked in the studio for a couple of days where we were challenged by exercises including painting from a reference photo tacked to the easel up-side down. We also were instructed to paint a landscape from memory. This was especially valuable because I didn't realize I had the ability to do it. I have added new elements to a composition but I had not painted the entire scene from my imagination. So we're home now and I'm putting newly learned methods to work on the Mojave Desert after a great week painting the Sonoran Desert. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwOAfK79L2gYlf0eafTTo8XpDsZitFRnXiJaz0CClTanW31yw3GkxMj2_RdctlpKbjWLRxCVsOxTAN0ROQfHYTJrpeK2pXw0VYW817DjeawAJ0_u9eowm8Q9DBp8CPLFC7cdpIcvg2k34/s1600/DSC_0002-3.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwOAfK79L2gYlf0eafTTo8XpDsZitFRnXiJaz0CClTanW31yw3GkxMj2_RdctlpKbjWLRxCVsOxTAN0ROQfHYTJrpeK2pXw0VYW817DjeawAJ0_u9eowm8Q9DBp8CPLFC7cdpIcvg2k34/s320/DSC_0002-3.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720682395094171842" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">An 8 x 10 of the mountains across from the arroyo. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2hT6AS2Qj7M-EYIRcNqxWYqloaWPPHUpJ_Bx2MP8zYfrCCfBI080VEvOI9m3T3-XiMc02uiLd7tMDSw2LgU6o69gGQZxhssJYHmzldNEPFy0AMB8edv6ofab-rwlsbGYUYfRO5K_j7ck/s1600/DSC_0028.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2hT6AS2Qj7M-EYIRcNqxWYqloaWPPHUpJ_Bx2MP8zYfrCCfBI080VEvOI9m3T3-XiMc02uiLd7tMDSw2LgU6o69gGQZxhssJYHmzldNEPFy0AMB8edv6ofab-rwlsbGYUYfRO5K_j7ck/s320/DSC_0028.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720681846904229586" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Painting along side of an arroyo in Tucson.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiulkj9k6rCoXO3ABrurW0CjlrjfOC10sOMucFQAIk7AwSb6783tBNnPsaE52M78zJkQYLiQWNa_gRJjdmRt3mDXIvXidTFI1hZw7aAUO_1FBr3o2_I0TnQ9gLUceqb5yaWqOMsnLvJnOs/s1600/DSC_0211.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiulkj9k6rCoXO3ABrurW0CjlrjfOC10sOMucFQAIk7AwSb6783tBNnPsaE52M78zJkQYLiQWNa_gRJjdmRt3mDXIvXidTFI1hZw7aAUO_1FBr3o2_I0TnQ9gLUceqb5yaWqOMsnLvJnOs/s320/DSC_0211.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720681306350685826" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Working at a state park just above the city of Tucson.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_oM6tg8vuYVTNWy1XOLrj5Rtedxy2krwuIQhBIxYDhfG2FFeNXKO_2pKKkRl8uExkfeFpYUv9O-o1aB-uWakagEWQQ2zUUe3fU5jMyV3jFcySxUseqsa7utCaKbKvl6GNtCJdjwJ5Nl4/s1600/DSC_0037.JPG" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_oM6tg8vuYVTNWy1XOLrj5Rtedxy2krwuIQhBIxYDhfG2FFeNXKO_2pKKkRl8uExkfeFpYUv9O-o1aB-uWakagEWQQ2zUUe3fU5jMyV3jFcySxUseqsa7utCaKbKvl6GNtCJdjwJ5Nl4/s320/DSC_0037.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720675989280733666" /></a><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span ><u><br /></u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span >Working on an 8 x 10 oil of a couple of palo verde trees. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span ><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span ><br /></span></div></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-76589539706070256782012-02-05T15:53:00.000-08:002012-02-05T16:07:37.745-08:00My Husband's Porcelain in Watercolor<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUdQ2cADIVqv2j_dFTuSIdT8GMaVdS9-HB91Nrtk0A3fSLlUEr9A5U29FfpWVTF1bSiEmlHFXQasgFUSWQ52YiquNnIdvhZVkhh2K5B-eUY3x7VRTb5KfIoNZiRMtlwWaCeABo0ggwCiY/s1600/DSC_0001-1.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUdQ2cADIVqv2j_dFTuSIdT8GMaVdS9-HB91Nrtk0A3fSLlUEr9A5U29FfpWVTF1bSiEmlHFXQasgFUSWQ52YiquNnIdvhZVkhh2K5B-eUY3x7VRTb5KfIoNZiRMtlwWaCeABo0ggwCiY/s320/DSC_0001-1.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705804357739499106" /></a><br /><div>While working on an oil painting of nearby Turtle Peak yesterday, I took a break for lunch and while sitting at the dinning room table I felt inspired to try a sketchbook page in watercolor of my husband's beautiful calico glazed porcelain. We have an old wooden chest near the window and it is covered with dozens of his pots. I have always liked the haphazard way they form interesting compositions. This vignette is painted in a new Fabriano Venezia sketchbook of fine drawing paper. The paper is really nice to work on. A colored pencil line just glides on and it has just the right amount of texture. I was surprised how well it takes the watercolor as well, but lifting back to light is really not possible so I added the highlight reflections with a little gouache. </div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-91664610797544005352011-10-21T17:03:00.000-07:002011-10-21T18:06:07.070-07:00Plein Air Watercolor of the Spring Mountains<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJDSyiOF5SdHmzRyDH4Zc2hgWJCcU6U5ikEARcFF1qai7s0eatBIvPk_NPF-lhOY1V1UvWIPtyVpemHdE9n_uRyXNVRN_S3ZmQR2onL_M5JScXKI9_cI5NADol2km4Mwy84SEI7cMpEKA/s1600/DSC_0016-3.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJDSyiOF5SdHmzRyDH4Zc2hgWJCcU6U5ikEARcFF1qai7s0eatBIvPk_NPF-lhOY1V1UvWIPtyVpemHdE9n_uRyXNVRN_S3ZmQR2onL_M5JScXKI9_cI5NADol2km4Mwy84SEI7cMpEKA/s320/DSC_0016-3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666104096303266914" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">"Blue Mountain Shadows" 11" x 8" watercolor </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I have been painting in Red Rock Canyon for the past couple of weeks as the weather is in the mid -80s with little wind. This is a nice time of year here in Las Vegas for painting en plein air. This painting is on Arches hot press from a block and you can see from the photo of my set-up below that I use masking tape on the edges of the paper as the tape helps to control the buckling of the paper when it is soaking from wet-into-wet washes. My windshield sunshade comes in handy clipped to my pochade box to keep the sun off the paper and palette. The desert is blooming again - our second spring - so I wanted to capture the beautiful yellows in the arroyo contrasting with the atmospheric blues in the distant Spring Mountains. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">There were lots of people enjoying the park this past Sunday when I painted this. While he was busy in the glazing area I sat down next to his wheel and sketched. This is his throwing wheel for the week with his sketchbook, coffee container, and water bottle on top of the wheelhead. He has a piece of wood spanning his water bucket and on that are some of his throwing tools. It was such a nice morning in the studio, still cool because the weather has been ten degrees cooler than normal for six weeks now. A few people were starting to throw and then Tom came in with a cardboard box full of beautiful carbon-trap shino glazed pieces. Some were his and some were from his personal collection. They were gorgeous and the stories he told that belong to each piece were fascinating. This was sketched in a 5" x 8" Moleskine.</div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-17765822154615581942011-02-14T14:58:00.000-08:002011-02-14T15:39:54.966-08:00Painting In Zion Canyon<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8dEnx2Toi4YdVCwvPIHesLPJzuaQBvDlp9yha5U1Ue3giVIGwv34HWI5oNr87qTpIjb5zE6EvpdM-z7xiRJw_PaUwmUdWuTTTORWqVX_pGuzPQ0L9_qINuS0zhGKdfCtd6tH4qFAIDac/s1600/DSC_0011-9.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8dEnx2Toi4YdVCwvPIHesLPJzuaQBvDlp9yha5U1Ue3giVIGwv34HWI5oNr87qTpIjb5zE6EvpdM-z7xiRJw_PaUwmUdWuTTTORWqVX_pGuzPQ0L9_qINuS0zhGKdfCtd6tH4qFAIDac/s320/DSC_0011-9.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573684316722994834" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">"Red Leaf Maple at Zion"</div><div style="text-align: center;">7" x 5"</div><div style="text-align: center;">Watercolor and Gouache</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">This little painting was done in an Arches 7" x 10" cold press watercolor sketchbook. I wanted a nice light/shadow pattern to play with. I was in the shade though as it was probably 100 degrees already even at 10 a.m. The vase is one of my husband's beautiful buff-colored stoneware pieces which he forms on the wheel with ribs held on the inside of the cylinder of clay while the vase shape developes. This method creates an outside surface texture that is organic and earthy. It was fun to work with dry-brush watercolor textures on cold press paper to depict pottery that has the same type of surface treatment. This was done in a Canson Montval watercolor sketchbook and was built up with 4-5 glazes layers. <br /></div><br /></div><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="if(typeof(jsCall)=='function'){jsCall();}else{setTimeout('jsCall()',500);}" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-19112489725201421322010-07-08T16:46:00.000-07:002010-07-08T18:12:50.350-07:00Sketchbooking From the Tailgate<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhizBHqPyqRLbVonM7qSCu1fLE5-6yBhnUkptvKGXm0N_Yy9Jj-z-hnVDv-nEZUWVvU_q6wGIXOHWu5fS-h81PJ6dc0hvhYy0t5UZQKylQc9mWHp2CHd1LdBRRHdkmYcEg4AnjybizhpAI/s1600/DSCN0611.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhizBHqPyqRLbVonM7qSCu1fLE5-6yBhnUkptvKGXm0N_Yy9Jj-z-hnVDv-nEZUWVvU_q6wGIXOHWu5fS-h81PJ6dc0hvhYy0t5UZQKylQc9mWHp2CHd1LdBRRHdkmYcEg4AnjybizhpAI/s320/DSCN0611.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491688124424448002" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">So I decided to brave the heat and head out to paint on location. I haven't been setting up an easel out in the field because when I stay in the shade of the top half of the back door of my car I have a larger shade area than with my umbrella. An old paint tarp thrown across the top of the door helps extend the shade as well. The above photo shows a watercolor of the Calico Hills done in a Canson Montval sketchbook. I really like this paper as it has just the right amount of surface texture and sizing. I spent about an hour on the sketch. I had taken an hour to set-up, but to be fair that time included a leisurely eaten breakfast while watching <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_0" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" leohighlights_keywords="the%20rock" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_2/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520rock%26domain%3Dwww.blogger.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_2/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520rock%26domain%3Dwww.blogger.com" leohighlights_underline="true">the rock</leo_highlight> climbers ascend the cliff face to my right.<br /></div><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqR3rpemW2iLMQln0KVM4Ppno9ULbX233nj0C6LS0Bal1G86Kb5XEA8AQTDRqk6k9XkB3aGAf9imBYCnlZPRkT3UppcFBfaaI0qu4gNw32MKHy3cipWPbCUH_uvh9cKYlK99fH-gNryL4/s1600/DSCN0615.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqR3rpemW2iLMQln0KVM4Ppno9ULbX233nj0C6LS0Bal1G86Kb5XEA8AQTDRqk6k9XkB3aGAf9imBYCnlZPRkT3UppcFBfaaI0qu4gNw32MKHy3cipWPbCUH_uvh9cKYlK99fH-gNryL4/s320/DSCN0615.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491687755327521074" border="0" /></a>This is a snapshot of the scene I was painting. Most of the plants on these hillsides were consumed in a lightening fire a couple of years ago. But the trees and shrubs in the gully are growing back nicely. I read in the Spring-Summer issue of Red Rock Canyon Keystone Visitor Guide that it takes 40 years for these plant communities to recover. Sometimes I paint the recovering areas with the mature growth I remember from before the fire.<br /></div><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDXA6sBs3_QFWaRewgAbsM-eFwWlCe38s5wKisrKjd-BCgQCsjMUIIr_1j5-o-pkyOqOaSgC2gK_cLevVnqhaKbW8-tCsZ3XXOvVOkDESJUr4hdc6fdPgJu16uUDioQ7sJF-VsKHQMfVc/s1600/DSCN0608.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDXA6sBs3_QFWaRewgAbsM-eFwWlCe38s5wKisrKjd-BCgQCsjMUIIr_1j5-o-pkyOqOaSgC2gK_cLevVnqhaKbW8-tCsZ3XXOvVOkDESJUr4hdc6fdPgJu16uUDioQ7sJF-VsKHQMfVc/s320/DSCN0608.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491687236139072194" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This watercolor is from last weekend. I bought the shell at PetSmart in their aquarium department just to have a new shell to play around with. I am using toned Rives BFK paper here - the tan shade - and I thought I might need a little white gouache for the whitest area of the shell. But I was surprised to find that I didn't need the white as the tan tone of the paper reads as a highlight next to the warm browns of burnt sienna and transparent oxide red. The transparent oxide red is from Daniel Smith and I added it to my watercolor palette after using it in my oil palette under advice from Richard Schmid in his book "Alla Prima". I really like this color and find it warms viridian to a wonderful earthy green and makes a good dark brown mixed with french ultramarine.<br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQwb5mNw6D_NfixGYrMh92fBPL4TIGOIr_iSCDChKnNdBcJq29A27ymtC-DvitRKaf1B-FieAxS3e_mkYP_Qo7gIgwFkkQ6dSXpX0o-SMWj0ZH5oYLEhwOs3F0AfvXIWmS_8zjTC3ZkI/s1600/DSCN0465.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQwb5mNw6D_NfixGYrMh92fBPL4TIGOIr_iSCDChKnNdBcJq29A27ymtC-DvitRKaf1B-FieAxS3e_mkYP_Qo7gIgwFkkQ6dSXpX0o-SMWj0ZH5oYLEhwOs3F0AfvXIWmS_8zjTC3ZkI/s320/DSCN0465.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477884195836819154" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Another plein air watercolor sketch from about a week ago. I was set up behind the old visitors center facing the Calico Hills. The hedge hog cactus were in bloom on this rocky hill and there were deep magenta blossoms all around me every 30 feet. They were gorgeous. Our brand new visitors center in Red Rock Canyon is wonderful by the way. After much planning and construction the new building opened in April. The habitat exhibits are fascinating and there is much to explore.<br /></div><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-73792553355235922372010-03-20T14:25:00.000-07:002010-03-20T14:45:46.173-07:00Oil Painting In Stages<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEgTb8Khe4QHuS3XDjuLGuaMy0JcKaJNQIW9xE6hURDQre9v6eu-dduF1xIoYV8OurYerj24xN7ZpzNBKUJzPkXEmZuZrN9pWatnoTQeBzy7n0ZkGypaKCdSsxh8NIt8mwmImZFq8mXI/s1600-h/DSC_0017-2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 297px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEgTb8Khe4QHuS3XDjuLGuaMy0JcKaJNQIW9xE6hURDQre9v6eu-dduF1xIoYV8OurYerj24xN7ZpzNBKUJzPkXEmZuZrN9pWatnoTQeBzy7n0ZkGypaKCdSsxh8NIt8mwmImZFq8mXI/s400/DSC_0017-2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450831635690670626" border="0" /></a><br />"Colorful Canyon"<br />6" x 8" Oil on Linen<br /><br />I have been working on small oil studies lately and this is an example. It is a view into Pine Creek Canyon from the Overlook trail. I have included stages of development below from the monochromatic block-in through completion. I always enjoy seeing other artists work through their processes so I thought some of you might also like to see mine. The colors in these digital photos are more vivid than in the actual painting. I must learn how to calibrate my monitor soon. I have been in heaven painting the beautiful snow and waterfalls of the Red Rock Canyon escarpment. The valley floor with all the dry washes full and rushing with the runoff are all so dramatic. I hardly knew what to paint first. Thank-you El Nino!<br /><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaj3SpqygkT1rXLpuyzZW4jV7vmLImhug3f8_vny5KAtz-aRiJzGgQQHLsjyNIInz9EwPx2fXPr_pqp64tKYqg7u4Qp-cwwujhBoWq7slsgiBqiPAw6gZ7_uJ2iwcQNOhbE1SH4knXlQA/s1600-h/DSCN0205-2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaj3SpqygkT1rXLpuyzZW4jV7vmLImhug3f8_vny5KAtz-aRiJzGgQQHLsjyNIInz9EwPx2fXPr_pqp64tKYqg7u4Qp-cwwujhBoWq7slsgiBqiPAw6gZ7_uJ2iwcQNOhbE1SH4knXlQA/s400/DSCN0205-2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439682049794271602" border="0" /></a>Early this winter I painted color charts for my oil palette. I have posted the chart for ultramarine blue deep above. The instructions for making these charts can be found in Richard Schmid's book "Alla Prima". This book can be see in the background of this photo and it is open to the pages that explain how to mix the colors. I used 1/4" masking tape between the squares of colors as advised. I made these charts on Gessobord which worked fine and they come in different sizes. I have pulled the tape off in the upper section so you can see the straight edges. The lower section where I am adding yellows and reds to the blue (to make green or purple squares) still has the tape on so the edges are still irregular. Of course these are oils so they take weeks to dry and you must pull the tape off while the paint is still fresh and wet.<br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDhnC140GgiOPOrq299texYAP5a4O6MZTkrtwffUVOXEdk09wvH2LE-Gf3uNQDIKhWK4MY4V6CpJV7d2cbKXEoSIA0wOlSvB1t2w6MVsOSx3LiX3rHls6Xu70VGQbQFTT9QMJRsdURRw/s1600-h/DSCN0201-2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDhnC140GgiOPOrq299texYAP5a4O6MZTkrtwffUVOXEdk09wvH2LE-Gf3uNQDIKhWK4MY4V6CpJV7d2cbKXEoSIA0wOlSvB1t2w6MVsOSx3LiX3rHls6Xu70VGQbQFTT9QMJRsdURRw/s400/DSCN0201-2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439681887652506930" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">This photo shows five of the seven charts I have finished. I still have 3 to 4 more to make. If you are thinking of starting to work in oils I highly recommend doing the charts. Each chart is dedicated to one color on your palette. This gessobord is 18"x 24" so there is plenty of room for two colors to be studied on one board. For example, yellow ochre is at the top section of the chart on the left side of the photo and burnt sienna is the section below it. That particular color is painted straight out of the tube and unmixed in the farthest left column. It is then mixed separately with each of the other colors on your palette. That new mixed color is painted in the square at the top of the next column. And that new mixed color is also mixed with white to four graduating values and each of those values is painted into a square going down the column. This has simplified the process of finding the right color, value and formula for any passage in a painting. It does take time to make the charts but it was truly worthwhile.<br /></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-86003352256570202092009-12-24T11:36:00.001-08:002009-12-24T13:15:25.596-08:00Handmade Sketchbook Finished!<div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEiWFpo3vPZW6p1qdtw0r-z0JBO_ISqLVgJ5geB7yei_yk8bpWGEFGIEZFWe-3sHTnEDPnNNl3sYVQoaixTqnEUAf_AfHmkaHmvvIeNUSzDwqc819XtkCSlSnP7Sv_eARaUpR9R8z_BtM/s1600-h/DSC_0091-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEiWFpo3vPZW6p1qdtw0r-z0JBO_ISqLVgJ5geB7yei_yk8bpWGEFGIEZFWe-3sHTnEDPnNNl3sYVQoaixTqnEUAf_AfHmkaHmvvIeNUSzDwqc819XtkCSlSnP7Sv_eARaUpR9R8z_BtM/s400/DSC_0091-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418891864534594322" border="0" /></a>Here it is! The sketchbooks we buy from the art stores are very nice but I wanted one with a variety of Fabriano surfaces as well as some fine drawing papers like Rives BFK in several tones. Many of the pages already have paintings or sketches on them because I began forming the pages for this sketchbook by tearing and folding from larger sheets of paper months ago and then I started using them even though I hadn't bound them into the book yet.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMs6t8jXrufJkgcy5S4MHPxDZeH9GEEjZugPaRkRxGWtSZakr1gkqm1B86ZiKaSBLuug-BaSbxLQQTA7NppLb5TVAulOBrm4bu9vIwJZg6KO3KjyBtQAoG1dL5_RXZkywfMbuhKT181EY/s1600/DSC_0158-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMs6t8jXrufJkgcy5S4MHPxDZeH9GEEjZugPaRkRxGWtSZakr1gkqm1B86ZiKaSBLuug-BaSbxLQQTA7NppLb5TVAulOBrm4bu9vIwJZg6KO3KjyBtQAoG1dL5_RXZkywfMbuhKT181EY/s400/DSC_0158-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407007993315475378" border="0" /></a><br />This photo shows the book block after I have assembled all the signatures and the cheesecloth spine and then sewn them all together. A signature is a group of folded leaves, or pages, inserted one inside the next for binding. I'm using a good book to help guide me through this process called Books, Boxes, & Wraps by Marilyn Webberlye & JoAn Forsyth. I've never bound a book before so this is a whole new experience for me.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitcx26TLabj9iO3REKsMdFSXNUmG0STthGQRhtlMzVDdtlaKPwjaA27hBn8dOixzrr6IhJKGqSGqmajLr4SlHC06m8r4hfyj5gh63A3nmSMzk1VN0H4qaRfxkUfmoG4QzxWGL4XvxS30c/s1600/DSC_0160-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitcx26TLabj9iO3REKsMdFSXNUmG0STthGQRhtlMzVDdtlaKPwjaA27hBn8dOixzrr6IhJKGqSGqmajLr4SlHC06m8r4hfyj5gh63A3nmSMzk1VN0H4qaRfxkUfmoG4QzxWGL4XvxS30c/s400/DSC_0160-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407008326297330178" border="0" /></a>Here you can see that the space between the signature units when laid flat is probably a little too wide. I must have left too much slack in the thread when sewing them. I was concerned that if I pulled too tightly I might have trouble getting the pages to lay flat when open but I may have over compensated. I spent hours doing this step so I decided not to redo it. You see the stack of 2 boards that I have placed the case between and the books on top to weigh it down. Those heavy art history books come in handy. I left the sketchbook cover (also called the case) to dry overnight. In my next blog entry I'll show attaching the book block to this case.<br /><br /> This drying process is the same method I use to flatten my watercolors by the way, after they are finished. I set the painting face down on this same table because it is waterproof. I spread water across the back of the painting with a large hake brush and put a sheet of plastic over it while the water soaks in for about 15 minutes. If you haven't seen this process done before it is a good idea to test it first on a scrap watercolor because you must be careful not to put too much water down or it could soak through to the other side where your painting is. 300 lb. paper needs more water than 140lb. paper. But you must use enough water to cause the paper to relax. I put a clean piece of cloth cut from an old cotton sheet down on the homesote board, put the painting on top of that. Then another piece of cotton goes down on top of the painting. Finally another piece of homesote board is placed on top and heavy books on top of that. I usually leave the painting under these weights for a day and a half. The homesote board is what I use in printmaking to dry etchings after pulling an edition. It is a board which pulls moisture into itself. Flattening this way makes matting and framing the painting easier as you won't see buckling of the painting under the edges of your window mat.<br /><br />I'm having a lot of fun with this and I can hopefully finish it soon! Stay tuned for the next installment of my book binding!<br /></div><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-68467595360494652592009-10-28T10:00:00.000-07:002009-10-28T10:31:20.628-07:00<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPNO3ymbsX1SHwTcrLspblWSMpVBDlD_jDXTwbAAa8J9BvcP2XFojQZKOlAljd83KJ_a1ilu9vz2MIG35VCX5H-bnCH9Y6wWBfF546ii1UNfGaaf823_Ldrie1EmfvsV-F4LiULl8DXM/s1600-h/DSC_5729-101.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 275px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPNO3ymbsX1SHwTcrLspblWSMpVBDlD_jDXTwbAAa8J9BvcP2XFojQZKOlAljd83KJ_a1ilu9vz2MIG35VCX5H-bnCH9Y6wWBfF546ii1UNfGaaf823_Ldrie1EmfvsV-F4LiULl8DXM/s400/DSC_5729-101.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397697478372926946" border="0" /></a><br />"Apache Plume and Purple Sage"<br />9" x 13" original watercolor<br /><br />This little watercolor was done in July and I intended to have it at the show in October but I ran out of time to mat or frame most of the paintings done in late summer. It is on Fabriano Extra White 140 lb. cold press. The scene is one I keep going back to because I am inspired by the mountains in Red Rock Canyon and also by the thick desert flora. I used small dashes of miskit for the flowers on the shrubs in order to preserve their light and after finishing the majority of the landscape I went back and put in the flower details at the end. The Apache Plume (in the middle ground right with the whitish blossoms) is an interesting plant because it's flower resembles a miniature five-petaled rose. But as many as 25 seed plumes develop and they look like tufts of feathers. They give the plant a soft, fluffy appearance which is a nice change from the yuccas and spiney cactus. We've seen these profuse "feather" shows in shades of delicate lime green, cream, pink and deep pink. An artist can't resist painting scenes like this. <br /><br /><br /></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-24866264593495041922009-10-14T10:25:00.000-07:002009-10-14T11:22:50.937-07:00Great show at Boulder City<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevmeLMofl5cmRd3et5r3TpbK8rmSOHN_fhaookWb0-PDl7aSQQ0ErLssl5aYt0KPgyfex9idfm8WNY1HAlyAKbnipCwck2i6XDOMZSWl3JQh_Apr559OsE9QsqpvHpnZ_9owcH5Sk-LM/s1600-h/IMG_2654.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevmeLMofl5cmRd3et5r3TpbK8rmSOHN_fhaookWb0-PDl7aSQQ0ErLssl5aYt0KPgyfex9idfm8WNY1HAlyAKbnipCwck2i6XDOMZSWl3JQh_Apr559OsE9QsqpvHpnZ_9owcH5Sk-LM/s400/IMG_2654.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392510265504332498" border="0" /></a><br />This is a picture of former Boulder City Mayor Bob Ferraro presenting me with my third place ribbon in the fine arts division at the Art in the Park festival in Boulder City. This was such an unexpected and much appreciated award given by the Boulder City Hospital Foundation which sponsors this show. The fine arts section of this show had over 130 artists exhibiting. There were several hundred more artists in the fine crafts and traditional crafts divisions as well. This is the first time Bill and I have done a festival of this size. We had quite a strong wind both days yet big crowds of art lovers still came out to support the artists, enjoy great food and listen to all the musicians. We are looking forward to exhibiting in the 2010 show! <br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkZoskeno3bO5caNfGZHDe3jPbrk8KeNejihEd4RbEYVyIRSpt_FIfSGb-m7vI-YRDJaCwyA5er2-6x5sKhu0Tdrul0i9qIdXsoEUq2b8zfs8vb1a3m8Hr6BE5CvOYbclD8xFRRZ3vME/s1600-h/CIMG8732-1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkZoskeno3bO5caNfGZHDe3jPbrk8KeNejihEd4RbEYVyIRSpt_FIfSGb-m7vI-YRDJaCwyA5er2-6x5sKhu0Tdrul0i9qIdXsoEUq2b8zfs8vb1a3m8Hr6BE5CvOYbclD8xFRRZ3vME/s400/CIMG8732-1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392508623233963442" border="0" /></a>A photo of our booth showing the framed paintings as well as a couple of our display cases which hold original paintings which are either mounted on foam core or matted. I had about a dozen paintings in my framing room which I didn't have in the show because I ran out of time to mat them. So I have been busy since this show getting those matted and now I have a bit of a head start for the next exhibit. <br /></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-73929195327949788572009-09-18T15:55:00.000-07:002009-09-28T11:50:31.540-07:00Boulder City Art in the Part Festival!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN0BDYLOdgEObgVbHjuFhQRUBYDE7ODMQYTHjy6DboBN4dLW4zcaBxThhKjPguWH2lKYD4ekFpNv0OxhSWOzrl3Bh-SDuewADx8G1yoPstue_S93WPaaus5beIi-vS9ubKB6OemdqMyz8/s1600-h/Art+in+the+Park+Festival+flyer+2009.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382946122634144594" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 309px; height: 400px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN0BDYLOdgEObgVbHjuFhQRUBYDE7ODMQYTHjy6DboBN4dLW4zcaBxThhKjPguWH2lKYD4ekFpNv0OxhSWOzrl3Bh-SDuewADx8G1yoPstue_S93WPaaus5beIi-vS9ubKB6OemdqMyz8/s400/Art+in+the+Park+Festival+flyer+2009.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div align="center">The Boulder City Art in the Part Festival is coming up and it's going to be on October 3rd and 4th. I will have my paintings on display that weekend so we are busy matting, framing and documenting all of the fresh paintings I have recently finished. I look forward to the response to my latest work and I also will enjoy seeing what my colleagues have produced in the past year. Hope to see you there!<br /><br /></div><div></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-60127614868892719612009-09-18T15:26:00.000-07:002009-09-23T21:39:03.174-07:00Sketchbook Pages<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj7-9ifUZSM6lvMTwAfHrMYO2iBzDJS34bjVwQnAQgUgq0Yc8dE_OJuJ9R174EyXgyEfkCosYG-8C2i4cGRfzck-g_WKS1qMmjhhhUnR3tCyIuvnuWUSvDVozvd2j3LMgLQDVumUZeZlA/s1600-h/DSC_0089-102.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382939414816001266" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 320px; height: 114px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj7-9ifUZSM6lvMTwAfHrMYO2iBzDJS34bjVwQnAQgUgq0Yc8dE_OJuJ9R174EyXgyEfkCosYG-8C2i4cGRfzck-g_WKS1qMmjhhhUnR3tCyIuvnuWUSvDVozvd2j3LMgLQDVumUZeZlA/s320/DSC_0089-102.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB_wUyuJ3_VCtzSxIttrAGE4Ei6M9iRtBSyL5zwtdC1d7ZlY2VkiOHWnjwy-E1mZJc8MVWL8oUOLio2MZy82GDCJzSl5sA9q_quab4uW8R0A6w-Rgc5kM6XQv04PIjeC3gVh_GhohUBko/s1600-h/DSC_0089-102.jpg"></a><div align="center"><br />The page on the right has a few of what I call small treasures of Red Rock Canyon. The datura bush was blooming in the picnic area of Red Springs and while I was studying it a beautiful woodpecker landed in the velvet ash tree above me. I missed a shot of him though as they're very camera shy. The day I found the pine cones Bill and I had driven up one of the old fire roads to visit one of our favorite springs. The pinyon pine cones we found there were beautiful with the green tips of their scales contrasting with the deep sienna centers. If you look closely you can see a little seed that was left. We stayed so late it was dark as we drove back down the mountain side and in the headlights we saw a desert bighorn sheep crossing the road ahead of us. A full moon was rising over Las Vegas and the lights of the city were sparkling silver and gold and ruby. It looked like Christmas in the valley.<br /></div><div></div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-75653428384586955062009-08-16T15:53:00.000-07:002009-09-18T14:45:49.130-07:00Study of Tenaya Tapestry<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7V73iAS_5uQiOP4vh-Sg_A9uSx85_vTonXXqJAVWnadbc8Gw1PCp5tATio5WL3mjWuMgwLN7sJtdzwTF47yL4u86BDI4eByRg6TGhmuFFpMKx_EV3C6OUpVsbo5cNl5_9kwDi5yvGkjI/s1600-h/DSC_0132-2.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370699406524712530" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: pointer; HEIGHT: 212px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7V73iAS_5uQiOP4vh-Sg_A9uSx85_vTonXXqJAVWnadbc8Gw1PCp5tATio5WL3mjWuMgwLN7sJtdzwTF47yL4u86BDI4eByRg6TGhmuFFpMKx_EV3C6OUpVsbo5cNl5_9kwDi5yvGkjI/s320/DSC_0132-2.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />"Study of Tenaya Tapestry"<br />8" x 12"<br />Original Watercolor<br /><br />This painting is a study I did last week in preparation for the full sheet painting I'm working on now. This one is on Arches rough 140 lb, although the big one is on Fabriano cold press 300 lb.<br />The colors in this digital photo are more vivid than in the actual painting. I'm still learning how to get an accurate color reproduction with my camera. The subject is a tinaja. Tinaja is a spanish word for earthen jar or tank. A tinaja is a pool of rainwater that collects in depressions in the sandstone. They can last for days or even weeks and so they are an important source of water for wildlife (or backpackers occasionally.) Tinajas are one of my favorite subjects for painting because they are pools of clear, cool water that reflect passing storms or blue sky or the rich colors of the sandstone that surround them. </div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8042163332944847580.post-37936339110611843382009-07-31T11:03:00.000-07:002009-07-31T11:42:55.140-07:00Sketchbook Pages<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuytBB99YSknHZcvEgvFBKqdkBYdVPcQTMXM6o5CKGmhMmqZhRcIgoQDCoByfXbYmAkxpOg6tsO97Ago96Ax_O_lntkThRFLMGLraoMv1MSabhpce8fprggJGsAZefYtDpfN-cSJSstE4/s1600-h/DSC_0001-6.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364687015508355106" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 265px; CURSOR: pointer; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuytBB99YSknHZcvEgvFBKqdkBYdVPcQTMXM6o5CKGmhMmqZhRcIgoQDCoByfXbYmAkxpOg6tsO97Ago96Ax_O_lntkThRFLMGLraoMv1MSabhpce8fprggJGsAZefYtDpfN-cSJSstE4/s320/DSC_0001-6.JPG" border="0" /></a>I went out to our little flowerbed in the backyard this morning and painted this page. Some of the glazes are still wet actually. I discovered a new color yesterday through the thoughtfulness of Stan Fellows at his blog Sketchbook by <a href="http://stanfellows.blogspot.com/">Stan Fellows</a>. (Thank-you, Stan) One of his entries shows his color palette and one of the colors-Holbein's Lavender-I had not tried before. In his beautiful paintings one could see that it is a luscious color. So I went down to Dick Blick and purchased a tube. I tried it out last night to paint a quick sketch of the salt shaker on the table and it was great for the shadow side of the white salt. Then when I looked out the window this morning and saw six new morning glories in bloom I noticed that just one of them was the exact color of this tube of lavendar. A little synchronicity to tempt me outside. So I dragged a couple of folding chairs and my palette and sketchbook out and just enjoyed myself. The lizards were once again playing tag on the block wall and they slowly venture closer to check me out. And a hummingbird flew by and decided to land in the willow tree just to my right and watch. She flew to the privet also just in front of me about eight feet away and then landed in the mock orange as well. She stayed there a while then flew back to the willow and stayed another five minutes. Smart little bird-changed her vantage point three times. </div>Lisa Faulkner Wrighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18339784385790450786noreply@blogger.com0
